How old were you when you had your stroke? 10

  • Date of your stroke?  12/21/2016
  • What general area do you live in?   Kansas City, Missouri
  • Type of Stroke?  I believe an Ischemic stroke.
  • Any known reasons for your stroke?  Chronic Sinusitis infection that traveled to the brain.
  • What were your symptoms? What were you feeling during your stroke? On December 21 I woke with a severe headache, Blurred vision. I was unable to walk. I couldn’t put on my clothes and I kept collapsing. My mom rushed me to the hospital. At first the doctor thought I was having complex migraines but after a CT scan they discovered I had in fact suffered a stroke.I started having severe headaches in November. Finally got diagnosed with chronic sinusitis. I was on an antibiotic but unfortunately it did not get rid of all the infection. The infection traveled into my brain and formed an abscess. The abscess blocked the flow of blood in brain resulting in a stroke.
  • Were you administered TPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator) within the first 3-5 hours of your stroke? No.
  • Where did you go for inpatient rehab? Children’s Mercy Hospital.
  • Where did you go for outpatient rehab? Ability KC
Any therapy tips you picked up during your time in therapy that might help others?

Consistent practice on exercises the therapists give you to do at home, helps you progress in therapy.

What are your biggest challenges/residual effects?

Being unable to open my left hand completely. Chronic fatigue.

What advice would you give someone recovering from a stroke now?

Keep pushing and never give up! Believe in yourself & stay positive.

What keeps you motivated now?

Surrounding myself with my friends, they keep me laughing. My family encourages me and that helps.

Post recovery, what is something you have learned that might encourage others? 

I have learned I am stronger than I ever knew I could be. Having tenacity and trying to stay positive even though things are hard.

What is something quirky/fun about yourself? 

Shopping is my favorite hobby : ) I am a shoe fanatic! I enjoy dancing and I’m a bit of a comedian. I also love emojii’s! I got lot’s of cool emojii stuff from family and friends when they visited me in the hospital 🙂

The Speech Therapist I worked with at AbilityKC told me about it.
